There’s something about a field of sunflowers that makes it almost impossible not to smile.
Maybe it’s the way the flowers seem to stretch endlessly toward the sky, or the warm late-summer light filtering through the rows. Maybe it’s the way your kids laugh as they run between the sunflowers, or the way they are transfixed by the bees buzzing from one bloom to the next.
Whatever it is, sunflower season feels a little bit magical — and it doesn’t last very long.
Every year, fields around Kansas City come alive with thousands of sunflowers, creating the perfect setting for late-summer family photos. For a short window while the fields are at their most beautiful, I offer a limited number of sunflower mini sessions for families, couples, and anyone who wants to remember this little slice of summer.
If you've been dreaming of photos in a sunflower field in Kansas City, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from when the sunflowers typically bloom and what to wear to what you can expect during a sunflower mini session.
Sunflower Mini Photography SessionS Near Kansas City
If you love the idea of beautiful, natural family photos but don't necessarily need a full hour in front of the camera, a sunflower mini session is the perfect little dose of summer.
These sessions are intentionally short and simple, giving us just enough time to wander through the sunflower field, capture the big smiles, the little in-between moments, and all of those details you'll want to remember years from now.
Rather than spending the entire session trying to get everyone to look at the camera, I'll guide you through a mix of natural interactions and classic portraits. We'll let your kids explore, snuggle up, hold hands, laugh together, and soak up the sunshine while I photograph everything as it unfolds.
And honestly, that's one of my favorite things about sunflower pictures. You don't have to manufacture the magic. It's already there.
The flowers give us a beautiful backdrop, the late-summer light does its thing, and we get to focus on the people you love most.
What's included in a sunflower field photo session?
Each sunflower mini session includes:
- 20 minutes of photography
- 10 edited digital images (with options to upgrade)
- A beautiful outdoor session at a local sunflower field
- Guidance throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands
- A relaxed, playful approach that's especially helpful for families with young kids
Because sunflower season is so short, these sessions are offered on a very limited number of dates each year.
If you've been waiting for an excuse to update the family photos hanging on your walls — or just want to bottle up a little piece of this particular season of your life — a sunflower photo session might be just the thing.
What to Wear for Sunflower Photos
Choosing what to wear for family photos can sometimes feel like the hardest part of the whole process. But the good news is that you don't need to dress your whole family in matching yellow outfits to make the most of a sunflower field.
Because the sunflowers are already such a strong color and backdrop, outfits tend to look best when they complement the field rather than compete with it. Think warm, earthy, and slightly muted tones that feel at home in late summer.
What colors to wear for sunflower pictures
Some of my favorite colors for sunflower photos include:
- Cream, ivory, and warm white
- Rust and terracotta
- Muted mustard
- Olive and sage green
- Dusty blue
- Warm brown and camel
- Soft mauve and dusty rose
- Denim
- Other warm, neutral earth tones
A rust-colored dress, mustard skirt, or dusty blue shirt can look beautiful surrounded by yellow flowers. The key is choosing colors that feel slightly softened rather than extremely bright or neon.
Don’t just stick to one color, either. In fact, I love when families coordinate rather than match. A combination of cream, denim, muted blue, and warm brown feels much more natural than everyone wearing the same shade.
What should you avoid wearing for sunflower pictures?
There's not a long list of rules when it comes to sunflower photo outfits, but there are a few things I'd keep in mind.
Since the field is already visually busy, very bold patterns, neon colors, and large logos can compete with the flowers and with the people you're actually there to photograph.
I also wouldn't recommend putting everyone in matching yellow. It might seem like the obvious choice for a sunflower field, but it can make it harder to distinguish your family from the background.
Instead, think about creating a little visual variety through color, texture, and movement.
A flowing dress, linen shirt, denim, corduroy, and accessories like a sun hat or rubber boots for the kids can all add interest without overwhelming the photographs.
What should kids wear for sunflower photos?
For little ones, comfort is especially important.
Sunflower fields can be hot, uneven, and full of things that are much more interesting to a toddler than having their picture taken. I want your kids to be able to move, explore, and actually enjoy the experience.
Flowy dresses, overalls, linen, cotton, and other comfortable natural fabrics tend to photograph beautifully while still allowing kids to be kids.
And don't worry if your child's outfit gets a little rumpled or their hair isn't perfectly in place by the end. Those imperfect little details are part of the story, too.
The best rule for sunflower photo outfits
When in doubt, start with the person whose outfit you love the most — often mom or the person who is most particular about what they want to wear — and build everyone else's outfits around it.
Choose complementary colors rather than identical ones, mix textures, and aim for outfits that feel like you. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. You'll be moving, cuddling, walking, and laughing during your session, and I want you to feel like yourself while you're doing it.
If you need a little more help putting everything together, I also have a complete guide to what to wear for family pictures, with more tips and outfit inspiration. I am also always happy to help with styling, so you don’t have to figure out what to wear for sunflower family pictures on your own!
What to Expect During a Sunflower Picture Mini Session
If you’ve never done a mini session before, you might be wondering what actually happens once you arrive.
The short answer: you don't have to know what to do.
You won't be expected to spend 20 minutes standing in one spot, smiling at the camera while I tell you to “say cheese.” Instead, I'll guide you through the session so we can get a mix of beautiful portraits and the little in-between moments that make your family yours.
We'll start with a few classic portraits
We'll usually begin with a few easy, traditional family photos while everyone is fresh and excited.
I'll give you direction so you know where to stand, where to look, and what to do with your hands. We'll get those photos where everyone is looking at the camera — but we won't stop there.
Then we'll let things unfold a little more naturally
Once we've gotten those must-have portraits, we'll move around a little bit more and let everyone loosen up.
Maybe your kids want to look for the biggest sunflower. Maybe they want to hold hands and run ahead. Maybe your toddler wants to be carried. Maybe everyone ends up laughing at something that had absolutely nothing to do with the photos.
Perfect.
Those moments are often the ones that end up being your favorites.
I'll guide you when you need it, but I'm also watching for the moments that happen naturally between the poses. A hand on a little shoulder. A kid looking up at their dad. The way your family squeezes together when you all start laughing. Those are the photographs I want you to have.
And then, before you know it, we're done
That's the beauty of a mini session.
We'll move quickly, keep things relaxed, and make the most of our time in the field. Before you know it, you'll be heading home with a little bit of golden-hour sunshine still on your clothes — and, hopefully, an evening of memories that feels like this season of your family.
Because that's really what these sessions are about.
Not perfect poses. Not perfectly behaved children.
Just a short, beautiful evening together, surrounded by sunflowers, with someone there to make sure you remember it.
SUNFLOWER FIELD Photo Tips
Late-summer sunflowers are stunning, and we are so incredibly lucky that there are local farmers who allow visitors to their sunflower fields every year — and doubly lucky that they allow photographers to use their fields for photos. I ask all of my clients to familiarize themselves with any rules or guidelines posted by the sunflower farm we're visiting so we can make sure we’re being respectful of the property, other visitors, and the people who live in the area.
Here are a few additional tips for sunflower farm photos:
Go early or later in the day
If you're hoping for beautiful light and a more comfortable experience, the middle of a hot Kansas City afternoon probably isn't your best bet.
Early morning or evening tends to offer softer light, while evening also gives you that warm golden-hour look that's especially beautiful with sunflowers. I schedule my sunflower farm minis for the hour or two before sunset, but if you’re interested in a morning session, send me an inquiry — mornings are just as beautiful, and I’d love to create with you!
Dress for the weather
Sunflower season in Kansas City is hot.
Even if you're visiting for a short time, bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Comfortable shoes are also a must. You'll be walking through an outdoor field, not strolling through a manicured garden, so leave the uncomfortable shoes at home.
And if you're bringing young children, I'd plan for the possibility that they'll get a little dusty, sweaty, or messy. That's part of the adventure.
Be prepared for crowds
The sunflower field I typically use for mini sessions is a popular destination during sunflower season, and for good reason.
If you're hoping to have the field mostly to yourself, you may be disappointed — especially during peak weekend hours. When we’re taking photos, patience can go a long way. I always try to look for less-busy areas, but I also try to embrace the fact that we’re sharing a beautiful place with other people who came for the same reason. (And don’t worry — photoshop can work wonders removing people from the background of photos!)

Respect the farm
This one is important.
The sunflowers may be beautiful, but they're also a working crop. Stay on designated paths and follow the farm's current guidelines rather than stepping into areas that are off-limits or picking flowers unless explicitly permitted.
A little care helps keep the fields beautiful for everyone who visits — and for future sunflower seasons, too.
Planning Your Kansas City Sunflower Photos
If you're searching for sunflower fields around Kansas City, you're certainly not alone. Every summer, people start looking for the best places to see sunflowers, take sunflower pictures, and squeeze in a little late-summer magic before the season disappears. So my best advice is to book early.
When should you start planning?
The short answer: earlier than you might think.
Because sunflower season is so dependent on weather and the growing season, you won't necessarily know the exact best dates until the flowers are getting close to blooming. But you can start thinking about outfits, scheduling, and whether you'd like to book a professional photographer well before the fields reach their peak.
For my KC sunflower field mini sessions, I'll keep an eye on the flowers as the season approaches and announce dates once I have a better idea of when the blooms will be at their best.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sunflower Mini Sessions in Kansas City
When do sunflowers bloom in Kansas City?
One of the trickiest things about planning sunflower photos is that sunflower season doesn't happen on an exact date every year. The fields typically bloom in late summer (often around Labor Day), and the best photography window is relatively short. That said, sunflower bloom dates can vary from year to year depending on planting dates and weather. I'll monitor the fields as the season approaches and schedule mini sessions around peak bloom.
When is the best time of day for sunflower photos?
Evening golden hour is usually ideal. The softer, warmer light creates beautiful photographs and helps avoid the harsh shadows and squinting that can happen in the middle of the day.
Early mornings are also beautiful in the sunflower fields, and often less busy. Reach out here if you’d like to schedule a morning sunflower field session.
How long does sunflower season last?
Unfortunately, not very long!
That's why sunflower mini sessions are offered for a limited number of dates rather than throughout the entire summer. If you've had your eye on sunflower photos, it's worth keeping an eye out for session announcements as the season approaches. Follow me on Instagram and join my email list to make sure you don’t miss it!
Sunflower season may be fleeting, but that's also part of the fun. For just a few weeks, the fields become this incredible golden backdrop — and then, just like that, summer moves on.
What should I wear for sunflower pictures?
Wondering how to dress for sunflower pictures? Warm, earthy, and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully with sunflowers. Think cream, ivory, rust, terracotta, dusty blue, olive, sage, mustard, denim, and other warm neutrals. I recommend coordinating your family's outfits rather than having everyone wear the same color.
I am always happy to help my clients with styling, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you want my help deciding what to wear to a sunflower photo shoot!
How long are sunflower mini sessions?
Sunflower mini sessions are designed to be short and relaxed, typically lasting around 20 minutes. The goal is to give you beautiful, varied photographs without asking your family to spend an entire evening posing for the camera.
What happens if it rains?
Outdoor sessions are always weather-dependent. If the weather isn't safe or the conditions aren't suitable for photography, I'll work with you to reschedule your session for another available date. Because sunflower season is short, I'll keep a close eye on the forecast and communicate any changes as early as possible.
Are sunflower mini sessions good for young children?
Absolutely. In fact, I love photographing families with little ones in the sunflower field. Kids don't need to sit still or smile at the camera for the entire session. We'll let them explore, interact with the flowers, and be themselves while I capture those moments alongside the more traditional family portraits.
What if my child doesn't cooperate?
This is probably the question I hear most from parents of young kids — and my answer is always the same: That's okay!
Your child doesn't need to sit perfectly still or smile on command for us to get beautiful photos.
In fact, some of the best sunflower pictures happen when kids are doing exactly what kids do. We'll give them room to move, explore, and interact with the flowers, and I'll work with their energy rather than trying to force them into something they're not comfortable with.
There's no expectation that your family will behave perfectly for the entire session. We're just looking for those little pockets of connection in between.
Do I need to bring anything to my sunflower mini session?
Just yourselves, water, and whatever you need to keep your family comfortable. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially for little ones, and I recommend bringing anything your kids may need to stay happy during the session (though I’d save the snacks for afterward to avoid crumbs or messes that will show in your photos!). There are typically no bathrooms at the sunflower fields, so please keep that in mind and plan accordingly.
Depending on your family’s schedule, drive time, and the timing of your mini session, you may also want to bring pajamas or comfortable clothes to change into afterward. (I often change my son into pajamas on the way home from a sunset session so we can transition straight to bedtime when we get home!)
Most importantly, come ready to have a little fun. You don't need to know how to pose or make your kids behave perfectly. That's my job.
