When most people think of family photos, they think of the classic “Christmas card” image: everyone standing still, probably in a field at sunset, (hopefully) smiling at the camera.
And when you search for family photo ideas, you’ll probably find about a thousand variations of just that.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! I think family pictures can be so much more. Your session can document the things you actually love doing together, the places you spend your weekends, the little traditions your kids will someday feel nostalgic for. The season of life you’re living right now.
Most importantly, they can be a chance for you all to actually spend time and connect with each other.
I’m Emily, a Kansas City family photographer who loves creating natural, story-driven sessions that feel authentic, nostalgic, and genuinely fun. Below are some of my favorite family picture ideas for sessions that feel original, memorable, and actually meaningful.
If anything on this list feels like you, reach out and let me know. Whether you’re dreaming of adventurous outdoor family photo ideas, cozy pictures at home, or something completely unexpected, I’d love to work with you!
Outdoor Family Photo Ideas
As a natural light photographer, I will never say no to a beautiful outdoor family session. But that doesn’t have to mean only standing in a random field and smiling at the camera! (Though to be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, I think those sessions are gorgeous, and I love to shoot those too).
But if you’re looking for something a little more unique or fun for your session, here are a few family photo shoot ideas outdoors:
1. Go fruit picking: Whether it’s strawberry, blackberry, cherry, or apple season, this is one of my favorite family photo ideas and gives everyone something to do with their hands!
2. Visit a flower farm: Kids love exploring, parents love pretty flowers, everyone wins!
3. Spend a day at the pumpkin patch: Hayrides, pumpkins, cider, wandering together through the fields — built-in storytelling everywhere.
4. Take a family hike: Especially meaningful for families who genuinely spend time outdoors together.
5. Explore downtown: Who says outdoor family photos have to take place in a park or field? Downtown Kansas City has so much to offer for family photo sessions, from colorful murals to interesting architecture to grungy alleyways and more.
6. Play at the lake: Skip the posed beach portraits and let the kids splash, throw rocks, and get their feet wet.
7. Build a bonfire: Blankets, marshmallows, hot chocolate, and campfire glow makes for the perfect fall storytelling session.
8. Visit a greenhouse: Okay, so maybe not *technically* outdoors, but greenhouse sessions offer dreamy light, tons of texture, and are perfect for plant lovers. (Also great for early spring or late fall sessions to get that green/outdoor look out of season!)
9. Go camping: Lanterns, tents, sleeping bags, s’mores, and kids who think it’s the greatest day ever.
10. Hang out by the pool: A poolside session is so fun for summer. Colorful swimsuits, fun floaties, big splashes, pure childhood joy.
11. Have a picnic: One of my favorite family picture ideas because it feels timeless and relaxed.
12. Visit a Christmas tree farm: A perfect option for late fall and holiday sessions.
13. Explore a sunflower field: We are super lucky to have some pretty spectacular sunflower fields near the KC metro. If you’re looking to take family photos in late August/early September, it may be worth timing your session for the blooms.
14. Run through a field at golden hour: Listen. It’s a classic for a reason.
I love these outdoor family photo ideas because they allow your kids to play, explore, and be themselves (and I promise we’ll get amazing photos in the process). Think of it as a chance to spend time together as a family, take the pressure off, and get photos of you all in your actual element — relaxed, unposed, and perfectly imperfect.
Cozy At-Home Family Picture Ideas
Speaking of relaxed sessions, some of the most meaningful family photos happen right at home. At-home sessions are so special because it’s a chance to document the place where so much of your family’s story is unfolding, where you probably spend the most time together, and where your children’s core memories are being made.
Here are a few of my favorite family photo ideas for at-home sessions:
15. Bake cookies: Flour-covered counters, tiny helping hands, sneaking chocolate chips…so sweet.
16. Make pancakes on a Saturday morning: This is the type of session that feels like a memory even before you take the photos. Pajamas, steaming cups of coffee, everyone gathered together in the kitchen — these are exactly the kinds of moments you’ll want to revisit years from now.
17. Read books together: A quiet day spent at home, playing with toys on the living room floor and reading books together on the couch, can lead to surprisingly beautiful (and meaningful) photos.
18. Build a blanket fort: Childhood magic in photo form.
19. Play board games: Perfect for families with older kids, especially if family game night is a sacred tradition in your house!
20. Work in the garden: Watering flowers, digging in the dirt, harvesting vegetables…there’s just something about tiny, dirt-covered hands holding a garden-fresh tomato.
21. Get on the floor and play: Think about it — how many photos do you have of yourself actually getting down on the floor and playing with your kids? (Yeah, I don’t have any either). But this is such a special and fleeting season of life, and it deserves to be documented.
22. Have a picnic in the yard: Whether you’re gathered around a table or spread out on a picnic blanket, this is one of those family picture ideas that just feels so sweet and nostalgic.
23. Make the bed: It sounds simple, but fresh white sheets, plenty of snuggles, and kids jumping on the bed with pure, unfiltered joy is peak family photo material in my opinion.
24. Decorate for Christmas: Twinkling lights, ornaments with special meaning, the joy and excitement of the holiday season in your kids’ eyes…how precious would it be to preserve that magic in photos you’ll cherish forever?
25. Have lemonade on the front porch: Rocking chairs, mason jars, porch swings, catching fireflies, and a perfect summer evening spent at home.
26. Dance in the living room: If music holds special meaning for your family, dust off your record collection, pull out your guitar, or turn on the bluetooth speaker for a living room dance party — you’d be surprised how special the photos can be.
27. Wash the family car in the driveway: Lots of suds, water hose fights, and classic Americana energy.
28. Document your bedtime routine: This idea may not be for everyone, but a documentary-style session that captures bathtime, bedtime books, and snuggles in the rocking chair could be incredibly sweet.
29. Play in the backyard: A personal favorite of mine, especially for summer. Whether you’re running through the sprinkler, playing on the swingset, digging in a sandbox, or just having popsicles on the porch, sometimes it’s those ordinary moments that become the most meaningful photos years later.
Lifestyle family sessions tend to age beautifully because they document what life actually looked like during a specific season. As a chronic sentimentalist with a soft spot for anything nostalgic, I will always encourage a family session that captures the beautiful, messy, real-life moments you’re going to ache for someday.
Colorful Family Photo Ideas
I love a family session that’s fun, colorful, and maybe even a little retro-coded — and these family picture ideas are perfect for that. If you’re looking for a playful session that feels a little different, these are some of my favorite quirky, colorful, and unique family picture ideas:
30. Visit an old-fashioned ice cream shop: Colorful, playful, and impossible not to love. (Plus, ice cream = a built-in bribe to get genuine laughs and smiles out of your kids!)
31. Go to a diner: An order of fries, a round of milkshakes, a vinyl booth and checkerboard floors are all you need for family photos that feel original, colorful, and genuinely fun.
32. Visit a county fair: The cotton candy, the rides, the games, the lights — so much storytelling potential here!
33. Go bowling: I think this could be such a fun session for the right family who wants photos that are a little fun, a little quirky, and totally “them.”
34. Ride a carousel: Instant childhood nostalgia.
35. Grab a burger: Your favorite local burger place (or pizza shop, or taco joint, or even a fast food chain) can make for an unexpected (and surprisingly cool) backdrop for family photos.
36. Get a snowcone: Nothing says summer like a cone full of ice drenched in color.
37. See a movie at a drive-in theater: Blankets, popcorn and movie snacks would make for such a fun session (bonus points if you have a car or truck that fits the old-school Americana vibe).
If you’re drawn to vintage Americana style, retro aesthetics, or simply want something a little unexpected for your family photo session, one of these colorful family photo ideas might be exactly what you’re looking for!
Adventurous Family Photo Ideas Outdoors
If your family isn’t the sit-still-and-smile type, lean into that. One of these adventurous outdoor family photo ideas could capture you in your element, exploring and actually doing something you love to do together. For example:
38. Go canoeing or kayaking together: There’s so much storytelling potential in a mini float trip.
39. Explore a lake or creek: Whether you’re wading through a creek or skipping rocks at a lake, family photos on the shore, in the mud, or in the water would be so cinematic.
40. Go fishing: If family fishing trips are a regular occurrence for your family, it would be so sweet to capture that with a photo session. (And is it weird to say that I find fish and worms are surprisingly photogenic?)
41. Rent a cabin for the weekend: Story time: I got married in a cabin that I rented on Airbnb, and I have the coolest wedding photos of anyone I know…so I think this could be so fun for a family session too! Imagine taking photos around the cabin and then ending with a little campfire and some s’mores. Perfection.
42. Watch the sunrise together: Getting everyone up and out the door that early might sound like a daunting task…but sunrise sessions are so special that it just might be worth it.
43. Take family photos in the rain: If it happens to be raining the day of your session, you can always reschedule — but you don’t have to. Because seriously, there’s nothing cuter than kids in raincoats, boots, and umbrellas, splashing in puddles and just being kids.
Adventurous family photo sessions often work especially well for active families because they give everyone permission to move.
Hands-on Family Picture Ideas
Some families connect best when they’re actually doing something together. If sitting still for an hour sounds like torture for your kids (or your spouse), a hands-on session can be a great way to keep everyone engaged while creating photos that feel natural and full of personality. And as an added bonus, these kinds of sessions often produce the most genuine smiles because everyone is focused on having fun instead of thinking about the camera.
Here are just a few ideas:
44. Paint a canvas: All you need is an old white sheet, some paintbrushes and canvases (and maybe some clothes you don’t mind getting messy), and you’ve got yourself a seriously fun and memorable family photo session.
45. Build something together: Whether you’re designing a derby car, constructing a new garden bed, or even restoring an old car, those moments in the garage with your little helpers make for priceless photos.
46. Play ball: If sports are a big thing in your family, let’s capture it in photos. Play a game of catch, toss a football around, shoot hoops or kick a soccer ball in the backyard — so much movement and storytelling potential.
47. Break out an instrument: Have dad play guitar while mom dances with the kids in the backyard. Or have mom sit at the piano next to the kid she’s teaching with the baby on her lap. Or get the whole faint band practicing together! If music is an important part of your family, these photos will be priceless someday.
48. Jump on the trampoline: Because fun and movement always lead to the best family photos. Trust me.
49. Make a craft project: Pull out the craft supply box and let your kids’ imaginations do the rest. Messy hands, homemade art, the pride on their faces when they hold up their creations to show you — what could be better?
50. Go for a family bike ride: A simple family walk, bike or scooter ride through the neighborhood at golden hour could honestly be the perfect way to sum up this season of life.
51. Visit a farmers market: Spend a slow Saturday morning browsing produce stands, picking the perfect bouquet of flowers, and maybe stopping for a little treat.
52. Make homemade pizza: Flour-covered countertops, flying cheese, tiny chefs proudly showing off their masterpieces — and you get dinner out of it. Win-win.
53. Plant flowers together: Perfect for spring and packed with storytelling opportunities.
One of my favorite things about this type of hands-on session is that it naturally takes the pressure off. Nobody is worrying about where their hands go or whether the kids are smiling. They’re simply spending time together — and that’s usually when the magic happens.
Family Photo Ideas to Mark a Milestone
Some of the most meaningful family photos don’t happen during perfectly planned sessions or styled outfits — they happen in the middle of real life transitions.
Moving, building, growing, leaving, beginning again.
These are the moments that tend to move quickly while you’re in them, but feel incredibly significant when you look back. And they’re often the ones we forget to document because we’re too busy living through them.
If you’re in a season of change, here are some family photo ideas that help preserve it:
54. Photograph your first home: Someday your kids won’t remember every detail of the place where they grew up. Photos can help preserve those memories, especially if you’re planning a move.
55. Take photos in the home you’re building: This is such a fun way to celebrate the new home (and life) you’re building. Imagine your kids scribbling their names on the framing before drywall goes up, peeking through unfinished windows, running through empty rooms, or standing in the future doorway of their bedroom.
56. Get pictures on moving day: Boxes everywhere, pizza on the floor because the table hasn’t been unpacked yet, endless possibilities, and the first of many memories you’ll make in your new home.
57. Photograph your son or daughter's adoption day: Celebrate a child officially joining the family with photos at the courthouse or at home.
58. Document the nursery in progress: Whether you’re expecting your first baby or adding another child to the family, documenting the process of preparing a room for them could be incredibly sweet. Imagine photos that capture you painting the walls, hanging artwork and mobiles over the crib, and eagerly anticipating his or her arrival.
59. Get one last photo of a place that’s meaningful to you: Whether you’re selling the family farm, saying goodbye to a grandparent’s home, or spending your last summer at the lake cabin that’s been in the family for decades, those bittersweet moments deserve to be documented.
60. Celebrate a new family pet: New puppy sessions are adorable (and chaotic — in the best way).
61. Get one last family photo before your baby leaves the nest: Whether it’s the last summer before your oldest leaves for college or the summer before you officially become empty-nesters, there’s something really powerful about capturing your home and family as it is right now — before everything changes forever.
These are the kinds of family photo ideas that don’t just document what your family looks like — they document what your life feels like right now.
And while milestone seasons can sometimes feel messy or overwhelming in the moment, they’re often the exact moments you’ll want to come back to years from now.
Family Photo Ideas with Toddlers
As a toddler mom myself, I know that family photos with little kids rarely go according to plan. And honestly? Good. That’s often where the magic happens.
But if you're looking for some foolproof family picture ideas that work well for toddlers who have a mind of their own, these are a few of my favorites:
62. Chase bubbles: There may not be a more foolproof toddler activity on the planet. The joy, the movement, the tiny outstretched hands trying to catch them — it photographs beautifully every single time.
63. Fly kites or toy airplanes: Nothing beats a little kid looking up at the sky with awe and wonder.
64. Play tag: Sometimes the simplest sessions are the best ones. Running, laughing, getting scooped up by mom or dad halfway through the chase — exactly the kind of moments you’ll miss someday.
65. Throw leaves: Rake, jump, toss, repeat. Ideal for fall family photos.
66. Pick wildflowers: Tiny bouquets. Chubby toddler hands. Need I say more?
67. Jump in puddles: If your kid loves puddles, let them jump in the puddles. Future-you will be glad you did.
68. Visit a playground: The slide they always race toward. The monkey bars they’re finally brave enough to try. Those details are worth remembering.
69. Push swings: Such a simple activity, but somehow it always produces some of the sweetest parent-child moments.
70. Ride tricycles: The kind of ordinary childhood memory that ends up feeling incredibly special twenty years from now.
The goal isn’t perfect behavior (or perfectly posed photos). The goal is preserving what this stage of life actually felt like.
Sentimental Family Picture Ideas
Some of the most meaningful family photo ideas aren’t elaborate at all. They’re personal.
71. Include the family dog: Or cat (if we’re photographing at your home), or horses, or chickens… because they’re part of the family too.
72. Photograph your family traditions: Whether it’s decorating Christmas cookies, Friday pizza night, Saturday morning pancakes, or annual camping trips, traditions are some of the most meaningful pieces of family life to preserve.
73. Visit a meaningful location: The family farm. Grandma’s house. The neighborhood where you take evening walks. The lake where you spend every summer. Places carry stories too. Want more location ideas? Check out my guide to where to take family photos in Kansas City.
74. Include grandparents: Few photographs become more valuable over time than the ones that include multiple generations together. There are so many ways to involve grandparents, whether you go fishing with grandpa, learn to bake grandma’s favorite recipe, or just sit together and chat on the porch. Inquire here to learn more about my extended family sessions!
75. Incorporate the family business: If your family owns a farm, restaurant, bookstore, coffeeshop, etc., photos there could be incredibly meaningful.
76. Document a favorite weekend routine: Maybe it’s a trip to the farmers market, coffee and donuts after church, or family movie night on the couch. Those ordinary rituals are often the things we’ll miss most later.
77. Use heirloom quilts or family items: I absolutely love incorporating pieces that have been passed down through generations. They add so much history, meaning, and personality to your photos.
78. Incorporate your vehicle: Whether it’s the the minivan you brought your babies home in, the classic car dad keeps in the garage, the family station wagon, the pickup truck tailgate you sit on to watch your kids play, or the RV that’s been home to some of your family’s favorite travel memories, there are so many creative ways to make it part of your session.
79. Include hobbies that define your family: Whether you’re a camping family, a sports family, a gardening family, a music family, or a board-game family, those shared interests are part of your story too.
80. Capture everyday moments: The bedtime books. The kitchen dance parties. The messy breakfasts. The sidewalk chalk. The things that feel ordinary now often become the things we miss most.
So don’t overthink it. Don’t worry too much about that dress you bought for the session but absolutely can’t convince your toddler to wear. Don’t stress if somebody gets dirty, somebody melts down, or somebody refuses to smile on command. Family life was never meant to be perfectly curated, and your photos don’t have to be either. Let the little imperfections be, stay in the moment, and enjoy your family. No matter what else you do for your family photo session, those are going to be the photos that end up meaning the most.
How to Get Ideas for a Family Picture
If you’re wondering how to get ideas for a family picture that feels fun, a little bit different, and true to your family, start by asking yourself a few simple questions:
- What does your family love doing together?
- What does a typical Saturday look like for you? How do you spend your weekends?
- What rituals or traditions, big or small, define your family?
- What words, feelings, or images come to mind when you think about the season of life you’re in right now?
- What little details do you hope you never forget about your kids and family at this age?
The best family photo ideas aren’t just the ones that create the prettiest pictures. They’re the ones that actually capture something real, meaningful, and nostalgic about this moment in your lives.
