If you don’t already have a location in mind for your photos, deciding where to get family pictures taken can feel daunting. Fortunately, it’s not something you have to figure out on your own — a good KC photographer will work with you to find the perfect spot for your session.
When I'm working with clients to plan their sessions, I think about five key factors when choosing a location:
1. Your style & personality as a family
Start by thinking about who you are as a family. Are you:
- Bold and adventurous?
- Quiet and reflective?
- Lighthearted and joyful?
What are your favorite things to do together? What are some of the first memories, stories, or images that come to mind when you think of your family — the ones that perfectly sum up who you are at your core?
Try closing your eyes and picturing your ideal family photo session. What do you see? You might also think about where your family feels the most connected — if you love spending time in nature, hiking or camping or sitting around a fire together, a wooded trail or nature preserve could be the perfect location for you. If you spend every Saturday morning going to the farmers market and strolling through the city, maybe an urban session fits you better.

Depending on your kids’ ages, temperaments, and levels of flexibility, this could influence how far you’re willing to travel for your session.
If you have younger kids, you might also want to think about how they do in the car — some have a higher tolerance for long drives than others! If everyone is grumpy and tired by the time you arrive at your photo location, the experience may not be as smooth as enjoyable for you, so it’s worth thinking about the distance you’re willing to travel.
Maybe it is worth it to you to drive an hour to get the location you want for your images, or maybe you want to stay closer to home. Either way is totally valid, and a good photographer will be mindful of your preferences as they work with you to pick a location.
5. Permits & access
Certain family photo locations in KC require a special permit for photographers. Generally, if you choose a location that requires a permit, you will be responsible for covering that added cost (usually $25–$100). Your photographer will let you know ahead of time which locations require a permit and will help you secure any necessary permits ahead of your session.
Also keep in mind that any other location you choose must allow public use/access, or you or your photographer will likely need to get express permission to photograph there (for example, if you want to involve a local business in your photo session).
