The list of things to do after you get engaged is honestly staggering. After the initial excitement wears off, you’ve got to start thinking about dress shopping and venue tours and guest lists and flowers and everything else that goes along with planning your big day. And if you’re wondering when to take engagement photos in the midst of all this…you’re not alone. 


The timing of your engagement session affects everything from your outfit and location options to how and where you’ll use your photos, so it’s smart to think about when you want to get it done. 


The good news is there’s no right or wrong answer for when to schedule engagement photos — but there are some helpful guidelines that can make planning a lot easier. 


As a Kansas City engagement photographer, I help couples decide when to take engagement pictures all the time. In this guide, I’m breaking down the best timing options, seasonal considerations, and how to choose a date that actually works for your life and wedding plans.

When Should You Take Engagement Photos? 

The short answer: most couples take engagement photos 6–12 months before their wedding. If you’ve been asking yourself, “when should we take engagement photos?” or “when do you take engagement pictures during the planning process,” this general timeframe will work well for most couples. 


This window gives you: 


  • Plenty of time to use your photos for save-the-dates
  • Flexibility with seasons and weather
  • Less stress as the wedding date gets closer 


That said, don’t panic if you’re already past that timeframe. There’s no hard-and-fast “rule” that you have to take engagement photos that far out, and it’s totally possible to schedule a session closer to your wedding date (more on that below).


But if you’re planning ahead and trying to determine the best time for you to take engagement pictures, it depends on a few key factors: 


  • Your wedding date
  • How you plan to use your photos
  • Your preferred season
  • Your schedule (and stress tolerance)


Let’s break it down.

When to Schedule Engagement Photos Based on Your Wedding Timeline 

9–12 Months Before the Wedding (Good for Longer Engagements) 

If you’re planning a longer engagement and/or a larger or more elaborate wedding, you’ll want to consider scheduling an engagement session further in advance — especially if you want to use your engagement photos for: 


  • Save-the-dates
  • Your wedding website
  • Events leading up to the wedding (bridal showers, etc.) 


Booking your engagement photos 9–12 months before your wedding gives you: 


  • Plenty of breathing room
  • More seasonal flexibility
  • Time to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed


This is especially helpful if you’re planning a fall wedding and want spring engagement photos (or vice versa). 


6–8 Months Before the Wedding (Most Common) 

This is the most popular timing for engagement photos and works well for most couples. At this point: 


  • Wedding planning is underway, but not overwhelming 
  • You may have a clearer vision for your wedding style
  • You can still use photos for save-the-dates, websites, decor, etc. 
  • You don’t have the stress of trying to squeeze in a session at the last minute


If you’re asking, “When do you take engagement photos relative to your wedding date?” — this window is usually the sweet spot. 


3–5 Months Before the Wedding (Still Totally Okay!) 

Maybe you’re planning a shorter engagement, or life got busy, or you just needed a breather before adding another thing to your to-do list. Whatever the reason, you can absolutely still take beautiful engagement photos closer to your wedding date — just keep in mind: 


  • You’ll need to factor in the photographer’s turnaround time (often a few weeks but can be longer during peak months) 
  • You might not get the photos done in time to use them for save-the-dates 
  • Your top-choice photographers may be booked out past your wedding date
  • Available dates may be more limited; flexibility is key


That said, engagement photos are still 100% worth doing, even if they’re just for you. There’s no rule that says engagement photos have to serve any purpose beyond celebrating this season of your life. (Take it from me — my husband and I eloped, were married three months after getting engaged, and never sent out save-the-dates or built a wedding website… but I’m still SO happy that we got engagement photos done. 1000% recommend). 

The Best Time of Year for Engagement Photos in Kansas City 

Kansas City is lucky enough to experience all four seasons — which means there’s truly no bad time to take engagement pictures. That being said, each season offers a different look and feel, so if you have the flexibility to choose which season you want for your engagement photos, here’s a guide to help you decide: 


Spring Engagement Photos (March–May)

Spring is fresh, light, and romantic — perfect if you want engagement photos with a soft, airy feel. 


Why couples love spring sessions in Kansas City: 


  • Fresh greens
  • Blooming trees and flowers
  • Mild temperatures
  • Lighter color palettes 


Just keep in mind that spring weather can be unpredictable, so flexibility is helpful. (Though, if you’re okay with a little playful spontaneity, rain in the forecast might not necessarily be a bad thing…hellooooo, The Notebook vibes). 


When to book spring engagement photos: 

Many photographers open their books for the following spring toward the end of the year (November/December). Pro tip: keep an eye out for photographers running Black Friday specials — many photographers will discount sessions that take place from March–June!  That being said, spring dates may not fill up as quickly as fall dates do, so it’s always worth reaching out to inquire.

Summer Engagement Photos (June–August)

Summer engagement photos feel warm, vibrant, and full of energy. It’s a great time to book engagement photos in KC, especially if you love: 


  • Longer evenings and golden hour light
  • Lush greenery
  • A relaxed, carefree vibe


When to book summer engagement photos:

Fall Engagement Photos (September–November) 

Fall is hands-down one of the most popular times to take engagement photos in Kansas City — for good reason. Fall sessions offer: 


  • Cooler temperatures
  • Cozy outfits and layers
  • Rich colors and fall foliage


If you’re dreaming of warm tones and cozy, romantic vibes, fall is hard to beat. 


When to book fall engagement photos: 

Fall sessions should ideally be booked by late spring or early summer (or even earlier for some in-demand photographers). Once you’ve chosen a photographer, inquire early to find out when they open their books for the fall! 


Winter Engagement Photos (December–February)

Winter is seriously a magical time for engagement pictures in KC. A winter session is perfect for couples who love: 


  • Cozy, intimate vibes
  • A more urban backdrop
  • In-home or coffee shop sessions
  • Neutral palettes and texture


There’s so much opportunity to get creative with a winter session, too — if you want to do something a little more out-of-the-box, a cozy campfire, a frolic in the snow, or an afternoon spent at your favorite brewery or bookstore would make for incredible engagement photos. Plus, winter sessions often mean more scheduling flexibility and fewer crowds! 


When to book winter engagement photos: 

Photographers often have more flexibility during the winter months, making last-minute sessions easier to book. Keep an eye out for photographers’ Black Friday deals — you may be able to snag a winter session for a discounted price!

A Note on Lighting & Time of Day

No matter the season, most photographers prefer to schedule sessions around golden hour — the hour or so before sunset — because the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. This means:


  • Evening sessions are most common
  • Start times change throughout the year (earlier in the fall and winter, later in the summer)
  • Your photographer will watch the light and schedule your session time based on location and season 


You don’t need to figure this out on your own — it’s part of the planning process! But it’s helpful to keep in mind as you’re thinking about when to take engagement pictures.
