But if you’re planning a shorter engagement, even 2–4 months before the wedding can still work — the key is booking as early as you can to get the date that you want.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos
It probably goes without saying, but wardrobe plays a huge role in the overall look and feel of your photos. The outfits you choose can communicate so much.
I’m a big believer that your engagement photos should be a true representation of you and your and your partner’s personal style — maybe just a little elevated. I provide wardrobe guidance based on what tends to photograph best with my personal photography and editing style, the season, and the location for your session, but here are a few good rules of thumb:
- Set the tone: again, think about the style of photographs you are aiming for (light and airy? Intimate and moody? Formal and sophisticated? Casual and down-to-earth?) and choose outfits that fit the vibe. Also think about how these images help set the tone for your wedding as well…if you include these photos on your save-the-dates or invitations, they will likely be photographed (along with your other details) on your wedding day.
- Think coordinating, not matching: before you go all “awkward Sears studio session” and rush out to buy yourselves matching turtlenecks, pause. Your photos will have so much more depth and visual interest if you think coordination vs. matching. Choose a color palette of 3–5 coordinating colors that work well together — start with 1–2 neutrals and then add 1–3 accent colors, and plan outfits around those. (Unless you just really want an awkward Sears studio session…in which case I suggest you go all out and get a matching turtleneck for the dog too!)
- Add some texture: layers are a great way to add some texture to your images. Think about adding a cardigan, jacket or even a throw blanket to incorporate a wider variety of textures in your session. I love a tasteful pattern too — for engagement sessions, I typically recommend no more than one thoughtful, well-coordinated pattern (and avoid anything too busy or bold).
- Remember accessories (and shoes!): details are everything when it comes to engagement photos! Choose jewelry that complements your outfits and flatters your features, and make sure you’re wearing clean, coordinating shoes for your session (you’d be surprised how noticeable shoes are in photos).
Styling is often the most stressful part of your entire engagement session, so it’s worth spending some time thinking through your wardrobe ahead of time (and don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for guidance and opinions on outfits you’re considering — most really appreciate being included in styling)!
What to Expect During an Engagement Photo Session
It is totally normal to feel a little nervous ahead of your session, especially if you haven’t booked a photographer before and don’t know what to expect. To help you feel more confident and prepared, here’s how the process typically goes:
1. Booking your photographer
