When you start daydreaming about your senior photos, one of the first things that probably comes to mind is the type of backdrop you want for your session. Do you see yourself frolicking through a golden field at sunset, exploring graffiti-lined alleyways, or showing your team spirit at your high school football stadium?

As a local senior photographer, my favorite thing about Kansas City senior picture locations is the incredible variety that’s available at our fingertips. Whether you want an urban setting with interesting architecture, a park or nature trail, or a rustic barn in the backdrop of your photos, you can find it somewhere in the metro. When it comes to senior pictures, Kansas City locations truly have it all. 

But all of these choices can also be overwhelming. You may only have time for one or two KC photo locations during your session — so how do you choose the best ones for you?

The senior picture locations you choose set the tone for your entire session and drastically impact the overall look and feel of your final gallery. 2. The season and timing of your session

When it comes to choosing senior photo locations in Kansas City — where we get all four seasons — timing is everything. The same park that boasts beautiful pink and white blooms in the spring will turn to warm red and brown hues in the fall. Soft green grass and wildflowers will give way to golden fields as the seasons change. Even the angle of the sun and the quality of light changes throughout the year, which can have a major impact on how a certain location looks in photos!

Certain KC senior picture locations photograph differently depending on the time of day as well. Not every location is going to work in midday sun, and waiting until golden hour might not always be the move (if you’re shooting in a heavily shaded area, for example). An experienced local photographer will be able to suggest the best spots for photos based on the date and time of your session. If your session includes more than one location, you’ll also want to consider the travel time between them — if you’re driving twenty minutes across the metro to get from a city backdrop to a more rural one, that will seriously cut into your allotted session time. 3. Your comfort level 

This is the thing so many people forget to consider when searching for senior picture locations in Kansas City, but you really shouldn’t overlook it. The more comfortable, confident and relaxed you can be in front of the camera, the better and more natural your photos are going to look — so it’s really important to think about how you’re going to feel in the locations that you choose. 

For example, if you feel self-conscious or awkward with too many extra people around (no shame because honestly, same), you might want to avoid super-popular locations at the height of photographer busy season. If you are terrified of bugs (again, hi, it’s me), wading through knee-high grass to get golden field shots might not be your best choice. 

Of course, we photographers do have some tips and tricks up our sleeve to work around these types of obstacles, and we’ll do everything we can to make whatever location you choose comfortable for you — just let us know when we’re planning your session so we can get creative and think about the best locations for you! 4. Permits & access

Certain locations for senior photos in KC require a special permit for photographers. Generally, if you choose a location that requires a permit, you will be responsible for covering that added cost (usually $25–$100). Your photographer will let you know ahead of time which locations require a permit and will secure any necessary permits for you ahead of your session. 

Also keep in mind that any other location you choose must allow public use/access, or you or your photographer will likely need to get express permission to photograph there (for example, if you want to involve a local business in your photo session). A good photographer will help you coordinate all of this, but it is something to keep in mind!
