You’ve made it to senior year of high school! Congratulations — whether you’re the senior in question, or a parent or guardian of a high school senior, this is such an exciting time in your lives. There are so many firsts and lasts to come this year, and of course you want to document it all. That’s where Kansas City senior photographers like me come in!
But combing through the dozens of senior photographers in Kansas City is an overwhelming task in and of itself. There are so many options, all with different packages and pricing and styles and personalities.

What to Look for in a Kansas City Senior Photographer
With so many different photographers in Kansas City for senior pictures, how do you even begin to choose one?
There are four big things to consider:
1. Style and Editing Approach
Every senior photographer in KC is going to have their own personal style. If you look at the work on my portfolio page, for example, you’ll see that my photography and editing style is warm and natural, with lots of soft, muted colors and golden hour light. My goal is to create timeless images that feel soulful and nostalgic (and that parents, grandparents, and other super-proud family members will find worthy of hanging on their walls!). Other photographers love bright, vivid colors and have a fun, funky editing style, while some lean more grungy and moody. (I love all of these photo styles, by the way…it just comes down to what you want for your particular session!)
Spend some time thinking about your personal style — how you like to dress, how you’ve decorated your home or bedroom — and about how you want your photos to look and feel. Scroll through the portfolios and social media feeds of the photographers you’re considering to see which ones align best with your vision for your photos!
2. Experience with Seniors
Senior sessions are unique because they’re typically individual portrait sessions. They’re not like weddings, where the photographer’s job is often to document the day as it naturally unfolds. And they’re not like family sessions, where the photographer is capturing interactions between family members. Senior photo photographers in KC need to have experience with:
- prompting and posing individual clients to get relaxed, natural-looking shots
- working with young adults who may feel uncomfortable or nervous in front of the camera (at first — an experienced photographer will know how to put their clients at ease!)
- designing sessions that truly speak to their clients’ interests, personalities, future goals and high school memories
This is why it’s so important to find a local photographer who has experience working with seniors specifically (and not just, say, weddings, newborns, or families.). Make sure any photographers you’re considering not only say they offer senior sessions — look for real senior sessions highlighted on their websites and portfolio pages.
3. Personality and Comfort Level
This is one of the most — if not the most — important things to look for in potential senior picture photographers in Kansas City. Basically…what are the vibes? Do you “click” with this photographer?
The best senior photos are the ones where you feel comfortable being yourself in front of the camera — which is why it’s so important to choose a KC senior photographer who puts you at ease! Like anybody else, some photographers are going to be louder, bolder or more bubbly or outgoing than others. Some are going to be more serious and focused. Some are going to be sarcastic and make jokes. Some are going to hype you up after every single shot. (Okay, that last one is me).
You can get to know a photographer’s personality through their website and social media — but even more importantly, through your interactions with them. Pay attention to how you feel when you’re talking to any photographer you’re considering. You are putting a lot of trust in them when you invest in their work and step in front of their lens, and you deserve to feel totally comfortable and confident in your choice.

4. Communication and Session Guidance
There is so much that goes into an amazing senior session experience — and so much of it comes down to the prep ahead of time! A good Kansas City senior photographer will design your experience especially for you — working with you to understand your vision for your senior photos and then narrowing down locations, consulting with you on wardrobe, planning specific shots, and incorporating details to bring that vision to life.
The best Kansas City senior photographers will have systems in place that do exactly that. They’ll be in regular contact with you leading up to your session, providing resources and using their expertise to guide you seamlessly through this process.

When Should You Book Senior Photos?
Timing plays a huge role in senior photos, especially in the Kansas City area where we get all four seasons (with each one looking wildly different in photos!)
Most families book senior sessions for:
- The summer before senior year — perfect if you want lush greens, wildflowers and a suntan in your pics
- The fall of senior year for warmer tones and cooler temps
But don’t sleep on spring sessions, either! Whether you want to knock senior photos out early during the spring before senior year or squeeze in a session the semester before graduation, spring in KC is an amazing time for photos. The parks are bursting with pink and white trees, temps are cooler, and popular locations are a little less crowded. (Some families will even book a second session for the spring of senior year to get cap and gown photos — this is such a neat way to see how much you’ve grown and changed over the course of your senior year. I do offer discounted sessions for families who want to book photos in more than one season!)
And if you’re thinking about a studio session for your senior photos (or want to get creative with a snowy senior session), winter is a possibility as well.
Whatever season you’re considering for senior photos, booking early gives you more flexibility with dates and locations, especially if you want a certain seasonal look for your photos or need your images ready by a yearbook deadline. It is never too early to reach out!
Kansas City Senior Photo Locations
One of my favorite things about being a senior photographer in Kansas City is the wide range of location options we have available at our fingertips. Depending on your style, sessions can include:
- An urban backdrop with brick walls, stairs, and architectural interest
- Parks with open fields, tall grasses, and seasonal color
- Tree-lined paths and quiet nature spots
- Iconic Kansas City landmarks like the Nelson Atkins museum, Loose Park, Liberty Memorial, etc.
- A more rural backdrop with country roads, old barns, and wooden fences
- A lake or creek
- A studio or greenhouse
- A local spot that has special meaning for you — your favorite coffee shop, a record store, your high school football stadium…the possibilities are endless!

What to Expect During Your KC Senior Photo Session
It is totally normal to feel a little anxious or unsure ahead of your session, especially if you haven’t booked a photographer before and don’t know what to expect. To help you feel more confident and prepared, here’s how the process typically goes:
1. Booking Your Photographer
When you find a photographer you might want to work with, the first step is to submit an inquiry to get more information about their packages and pricing, the experience they provide, and their availability.
When you're ready to book, the photographer will work with you to choose a date for your session. You may sign a contract and/or pay a retainer fee to officially secure your date. Once that’s done, you’re on the books!
2. Ahead of Your Session
Once you’ve officially booked your senior photographer, the fun can begin! The planning and prep stage is so important to your overall senior photo experience.
The best Kansas City-area senior photographers will get to know more about you and your vision for your photos, and will offer location suggestions, outfit guidance, and insider tips that will help you bring that vision to life.
3. The Session Itself
Your senior photo session should feel relaxed and guided. You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s the photographer’s job! They’ll guide you through various prompts and poses to capture natural movement and genuine expressions.
The length of your session will typically depend on the package you select with your photographer; most senior sessions range from 1–2 hours and may include 2–3 different locations and outfit changes in that time.
4. After the Session
Your photographer will let you know what their current turnaround time is — often a couple of weeks, but it may be longer during busy seasons. I know you can’t wait to see your images, but it takes time to meticulously edit every photo to get that final, polished look. Ask if they will share sneak peeks as they’re editing — many do!
When your photos are ready, you’ll get an email with a link to view and download your images.

How far in advance should we book?
Most Kansas City senior photographers book months ahead, especially for summer and fall. Earlier is always better.
That said, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me about my availability, even if you think you’ve waited too long to book. I believe everyone deserves a senior photo session if they want one, and I will do my absolute best to fit you in!
What should seniors wear to their session?
I’m a big believer that your senior photos should be a true representation of you and your personal style! I do provide style guidance based on what tends to photograph best with my personal photography and editing style, the season, and the location for your shoot. I love to collaborate on styling and am happy to work with you ahead of your session to plan the perfect outfits for your photos!
Can parents be involved?
Yes, absolutely, of course! Many parents help with outfit changes, encouragement, or simply being there for support. Whether a parent/guardian wants to be the main point of contact throughout the booking and planning process or simply comes along to assist with the session, you are always more than welcome!
